This is too funny! Imagine the Beastie Boys with 55% cowbell and 31% Walken! Now all we need is Will Ferrell dancing in the background in a cropped wool sweater with his gut bouncing around. Priceless!

Don't get it? Here's the background scoop from "morecowbell.dj":

"More cowbell" is an American pop culture catch phrase originally derived from an April 8, 2000 Saturday Night Live comedy sketch about the recording of the song "(Don't Fear) The Reaper" by Blue Öyster Cult. The sketch featured guest host Christopher Walken as music producer Bruce Dickinson and Will Ferrell as fictional cowbell player Gene Frenkle. In the television special Saturday Night Live: 101 Most Unforgettable Moments, this sketch is moment number five."

But you don't look sick...

It's finally time for a Public Service Announcement about LUPUS...

My Story

I've heard it time and time again... "But you look okay" and "you sure don't look sick so you must be feeling good." It's a good thing I don't like look I feel some days!! Other people think that pain is all in your head. Sometimes they just don't know what to say and think you're exaggerating. Some people think that since a week has passed you're feeling better and are pain-free just like they would be. Minimizing the seriousness of the pain will just make it magically disappear, right? You obviously haven't experienced lupus!

It all started in 1992 when I had mono my first year of college. It seemed like I was never able to get rid of it. The unexplained pains and aching, mystery symptoms, the extreme fatigue... I would sleep the day away if I could! Then the extreme joint pain set in and I struggled most of my college career, especially during the winter. Maybe it's stress, or depression the doctors would say. Blood tests were off the charts. The clinic visits became more frequent, yet nobody could figure out what was wrong. How frustrating! Why would I make myself feel like this? They even sent me to a cancer clinic with no avail.

After our son was born the pain increased even more and after a few years I felt like I could hardly walk. Just waking up was a chore. Work was frustrating; trying to stay focused and make the pain go away. I also feel like I missed out on a few great years when our son was a baby because I was so damn tired all I wanted to do was sleep! Yet I couldn't because everything hurt!

After a very thorough examination by my new primary physician (whom my husband finally told me to go to), she referred me to a rheumatologist to see if I maybe had rheumatoid arthritis, or possibly lupus. How frightening, yet somebody finally believes there is something wrong with me! I was finally diagnosed in 2000 with SLE (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus) after battling the symptoms for what seemed like an eternity. It was determined that I also have Connective Tissue Disease along with Fibromyalgia. The positive thing is that with medication most people (like myself) with lupus can live a normal life. Unfortunately every cold, flu, or virus that rolls around I always seem to catch. That's the other bad thing about having an impaired immune system.

I've been lucky and have only dealt with a few bad flare-ups since being diagnosed. Unfortunately, I'm in the beginning stages of one again right now. This time my diaphragm is involved and has been causing shortness of breath along with spleen enlargement, low-grade fevers, pain and fatigue. Every day seems to bring on a new mysterious symptom setting me in a "Google-Frenzy" trying to figure out what is going on. So far, believe it or not, this has been a little easier to handle than the extreme joint pain I've experienced in the past. That still doesn't make it any fun, in fact I'm dreading having to go back and forth to specialists. Hopefully, I'll find out at my next appointment on Thursday what our plan of attack will be. The good thing is these doctors are specialized with the organs involved and can hopefully help lessen the flare. I've heard this a million times from family members, too, but always make sure you return to your doctor for your yearly (or however often they request) tests... even if you feel okay! Ladies, this includes the dreaded woman-parts doctor as well. Whether you have lupus or not, you need to take care of yourself. The annoying tests they run also serve as a great reference point if something goes wrong later on.

One of the ways I've found relief is through the love and support of my family & friends. Sometimes just having someone listen to the crap my body goes through helps soothe my soul a little. Occasionally I'm crabby because I'm in excruciating pain for days. They are the ones that know and understand that I'm not feeling quite right and don't hold judgment against me or think that I'm just being lazy or bitchy on purpose. Most importantly, I can't let lupus run my life! I still need to be involved with the things I enjoy, just maybe on a lesser level. I occasionally need to be reminded when it's time to kick it down a notch and take care of myself.

My story is very similar to that of many other people with lupus. Unfortunately, some patients have a more severe struggle and acquire irreversible damage. I can consider myself very lucky so far.

Enough already. So what is Lupus?

Lupus is a chronic (long-lasting) autoimmune disease in which the immune system becomes overactive and starts attacking normal tissue. This results in inflammation, which in turn brings on the symptoms. The disease can affect various parts of the body including the skin, joints, heart, lungs, blood, kidneys and brain.

Normally the body's immune system helps protect the body against viruses, bacteria, and other foreign materials. In an autoimmune disorder like lupus, the body cannot tell the difference between foreign substances and its own cells and tissues. The immune system then makes antibodies directed against itself causing inflammation, pain and damage in various parts of the body.

The Lupus Foundation of America (LFA) estimates 1.5 - 2 million Americans have a form of lupus, but the actual number may be higher since many cases go undiagnosed. More than 90% of people with lupus are women. Symptoms occur most often when women are in their childbearing years, between the ages of 15 and 45. There is no single diagnostic test for lupus. Diagnosis is quicker than it was 20 years ago, yet some doctors need to be more aware of this debilitating disease as it frequently gets overlooked. When lupus is in the early stages, it takes a while to diagnose since the disease develops slowly and builds over time.

Think you or someone you know might have lupus?

Some of the main symptoms include:

  • Achy or swollen joints
  • Low-grade fever
  • Unexplained, prolonged extreme fatigue
  • Skin rashes, including a butterfly shaped rash across the cheeks and nose
  • Pain in the chest on deep breathing
  • Anemia or other hematological disorder
  • Excessive protein in the urine (renal disorder)
  • Sensitivity to sun or ultraviolet light
  • Hair loss
  • Abnormal blood clotting problems
  • Fingers turning white and/or blue in the cold
  • Seizures
  • Mouth or nose ulcers lasting longer than two weeks
Most people with lupus do not experience all of the symptoms above, but it can serve as a guide for diagnosis, or to signal a flare. Note: Many other diseases can mimic lupus, so having one or a few of those symptoms does not necessarily mean you have lupus. Only a doctor and many, many blood tests will determine the diagnosis!

Someone you know has lupus. Help spread awareness and together we can fight for a cure!

Nuernberg Bridal Cup

And now, for something completely different...

I recently witnessed this tradition at my friend’s wedding in April. Since her father is German it seemed fitting. The beautifully crafted cup allows the bride and groom to toast to their wedding from the same vessel. A memory that all their guests will certainly not forget either. Can you figure it out?

This German wedding tradition started way back in 1450 and represents the start of a life long union between man and woman and is a symbol of faithfulness and good luck.

Here’s the link if you’d like to read the actual history behind the cup… Quite interesting!

This Week's Wine Rack Find

Cinderblock Wine Rack

Store your wine in true redneck fashion! Stackable design, with each unit holding 2-4 bottles. Horizontal or vertical display!

Eeny, meeny, miny, moe... Jen or Matt?

Finale (Part 1) Petrozza vs. Christina

I don't know why I expected this week's episode to be a 2-hour finale. Very disappointed it wasn't! Also a correction from my last Hell's Kitchen post... I said they would be crowned Sous-Chef for the new LA restaurant. Not true! I guess I shouldn't read other people's rumors. They will indeed be the Executive Chef and will be overseen by Josh Emett, Chef from The Gordon Ramsay at The London Hotel in NYC.

So the final two contestants start choosing how their restaurant will look as well as the uniforms for their wait staff. What was with Petrozza and the flower fetish? The only reason I think Christina has an edge over P-man is she seems more classy, organized and calm about everything — from her menu to dealing with the disaster she came back to after their meeting in NY. I really liked her brown color scheme though! What was funny is her hatred for stripes, yet was she not wearing a striped shirt?

Petrozza seems likes he's just winging everything. Making the leek paint brushes as a garnish was the icing on the cake. What was he thinking?! Whoopi Goldberg also made a guest appearance... why? That seemed kind of weird to me.

Okay, I think I'm leaning more towards Christina as my pick now, yes?

With Petrozza winning the signature dish challenge in NY, he gets first pick at his chefs and snags Bobby while Christina chooses Corey. Petrozza grabs Ben. Christina grabs Louross. Two people are left: Jen and Matt. It's like elementary school all over!

Who would you pick? Eeny, meeny, miny, moe...

6.25.2008

Who'll get stuck with Jen next week?

I'm okay with Corey being the last one sent home on Hell's Kitchen. She was my pick, but like I said earlier, she started falling behind these past few episodes. Any of those top three would have been fine with me, but Jen definitely had to go before this trio! I thought it was humorous when Corey was picking the ice during the "punishment" and said that sometimes she pretends it's Jen. Maybe I need an ice block to get my frustrations out?

But now between Christina & Petrozza... hmm... I think Petrozza will be crowned the winner. He's more calm and focused in the kitchen and doesn't get involved in the kitchen conflict. Only downside is he's not a very tidy guy. That might not sit well with Ramsay. Christina's inexperience will show; yet surprisingly she's won the past three challenges! Good for her though — she even saw this challenge coming when she was eating with her parents. If she had only listened to her mom about the cream!

What I can't wait to see next week is who picks (or gets stuck with) Jen! I'm anticipating the sabotage already (cue in The Beastie Boys... Listen All Y'all It's A Sab-a-taaage) Christina commented that she'd pick Corey to be on her team. Not sure how that will pan out since they're technically "frenemies".

From the sounds of it, the winner will become "Sous-Chef" and not the coveted "Executive Chef" of the new LA restaurant. What an experience still that would be!

Who's your pick?
Petrozza
Christina

Kitchen Nightmare's Fall Trailer

The quality is not the best, but as promised I finally tracked down the trailer for the next season of Gordon Ramsay's Kitchen Nightmares. NOTE: I don't like the photo still they chose for the video — yuck! Anyway, enjoy it you f'ing donuts...

Coming Thursdays this Fall

Hell's Kitchen is still my preference of the two Ramsay shows, but my favorite KN episode from last September was when he visited Peter's in Babylon, NY. I'm originally from Long Island so it was great to see familiar turf. The family-run Italian restaurant showcased bad food and lot's of family feuding. Peter even punched a bill collector during an extreme fit of rage. Classy! For everyone wondering though, Gordon brings the family closer and the restaurant back up to par in the end. Aww, isn't that nice?

Catch Hell's Kitchen Tonight — Tune in to FOX at 8 Central!

I'm ready for tonight's new episode of Hell's Kitchen. With Jen finally gone, the top 3 contenders battle it out for the new LA restaurant — Corey, Christina & Petrozza each get a chance at running the kitchen. That always makes for a good episode. Lot's of yelling, swearing & tears...

And, who could possibly be the mystery guest?

This Week's Wine Rack Find

After my Hell's Kitchen post today, I'm posting a not-so-serious wine rack.

Ding, Dong! Hell's Bitch Jen is gone!

After bringing the team down time after time, and stirring the pot with her "me-attitude" — Jen has finally left Hell's Kitchen! Man that woman can babble on and on...The only way she could have stayed is if they duct-taped her mouth shut. But then, she couldn't eat the left overs from the pregnant ladies plates. That was really gross, but not surprising! My favorite line about her almost has to be when Jean Philippe asks her, "Are you going to be bitchy all day?" Who else thinks Ramsay or the producers kept her on the show just to provide conflict? I would almost bet, too, that she was the one that voted twice when they went back to decide the two that should go home.

I've been routing for Corey all along, but she really didn't do that great last night. She seemed really sluggish and just not with it. The raw fish was gross. I'm sure we was frustrated and the pressure was starting to get to her. Christina came from out of nowhere and won the individual challenge. She was a star last week, too. It was funny watching her have such a blast trying on and winning tons of designer clothes. That really chapped the rest of the team when she came back, but I don't agree with how they were completely ignoring her. That doesn't show teamwork on their part and should be noted for future reference. No matter how jealous or angry they were, she won the challenge fair & square and didn't deserve the lashings from her teammates. But, burning Chef Ramsay two times during dinner service needs to be added to her list of screw-ups.

Ramsey at the end of the episode squeaks out a, "Well done, now f-off!"... Who will the mystery guest be next week? Ooooh...

I would be happy with any of the remaining three winning at the end — Corey, Petrozza, or Christina.

Did you see the Kitchen Nightmares trailer for the new fall season? That was hilarious! I'm looking for the trailer and will post it when it surfaces on the web...

The yard is already stocked with apples, gooseberries, chokecherries, plums, june berries... you name it. This is exciting though! The next few years we'll finally have fun making wines and jellies.
